The first step is to determine what kind of threat you are trying to protect against. For example, defending against personal threats, such as assault, requires different measures than defending against burglary.
Most home burglars are oportunists. They do not give a great amount of thought to planning the job and assessing the benefits vs. dangers, but understanding how they choose a target can go a long way in reducing your chances of being a victim.
In its basic form ALL crimes have three elements that have to be present for the crime to occur. The motivated offender, a target (your home) and an opportunity, which maybe an open window or poor security. Preventing the crime can be achieved by removing any one of these elements. At Home Security Grilles we concentrate on helping you remove the opportunity with our professionally fitted security grilles.
Most burglars look for:
Something worth stealing
Easy access combined with low visibility
A home that is unoccupied
Why not try looking at your property from the point of view of a potential burglar? Is it obvious the house is empty when you are out? Is there easy access to the rear of the property? Are there windows or doors in areas hidden from any natural surveillance from neighbours where a burglar has time to work unseen?
Did you know? More residential burglaries occur during the day because homes tend to be vacant more often.
Residential Burglaries: A daytime offence:
While the vast majority of residential burglaries occur when there is no one at home, in the United Kingdom a significant percentage of residential burglaries occur when a person is actually at home.
While there is some fluctuation in statistics from year to year, on average about 15% of the time, a person is at home when a residential burglary occurs.
Most people make the assumption that residential burglaries occur under the darkness of night. In point of fact, this is a false impression, between sixty and seventy percent of all residential burglaries occur in the daytime.
Frequency of Residential Burglaries:
Unfortunately, residential burglaries are common occurrences, at least three home burglaries occur every minute.

Average Losses in a typical Home Burglary:
In the United Kingdom, the average amount of losses for an individual home or residential burglary is in the neighbourhood of £2,000.00. The rate of loss is similar in the United States, coming in at about $1,400.00 per individual burglary.
Each year, the amount of average losses associated with individual residential burglaries has continued to increase. The trend is expected to continue on into the immediate future as well.
